A little taste of September

Late-summer berries meet the first flavours of autumn. Here are some of the fruit and vegetables to look out for, with a few ideas to help you enjoy what you have.

🌿 What’s growing this month?

Illustration of September produce: blackberries, damsons, broccoli, carrots, celery, French beans, watercress, butternut squash.
  • Blackberries and damsons bring a taste of late summer.
  • Broccoli, carrots, celery and French beans are among the vegetables harvested in September.
  • Watercress is still in its British growing season.
  • Butternut squash starts to join the autumn harvest as the fruit ripens.

A little inspiration for eating with the seasons. These foods are usually in season in the UK this month, although timing can vary with the weather and where they’re grown.

🥣 Bring a little of the season into your kitchen

Give berries a second helping

Use blackberries as part of the fruit in our Summer Berry Pudding — a lovely way to use up bread too.

Save those celery leaves

Turn them into Homemade Celery Salt, or visit our celery storage tips to keep the rest fresh.

Make something warming

Carrots and celery make a useful start for a soup or stew. Roast ripe butternut squash for an autumn meal, or explore our pumpkin ideas as the season moves on.
